Miss Universe Superwomen: Successful Titleholders

Miss Universe pageant is months away from now and we know how excited you are to watch the most prestigious pageant in the world with the most gorgeous women competing for the title. But inasmuch as we all want it to happen soon, all we can do is to just sit and wait till January. So, to give you a little bit of something to read, we researched about our past titleholders’ life after their reign and composed a list of the most successful queens in terms of advocacy, career, and humanitarian causes. Here they are:

MPULE KWELAGOBE
Miss Universe 1999 from Botswana
Botswanian goodwill ambassador and young global leader

Mpule is the first Miss Botswana to participate in Miss Universe and won right away. Following her reign, she became a spokesmodel for Clairol. After her reign, she was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador by the United Nations, focusing on youth and HIV/AIDS. Among others, she has addressed the United States Congress (the United States House of Representatives Committee on Banking and Financial Services. Mpule testified on the socioeconomic impact of AIDS in Africa and proposed a bill to set up a World Bank AIDS prevention trust fund). She has also addressed: The 4th United Nations World Youth Summit (Dakar, Senegal), The United Nations General Assembly (New York, USA), The World Summit on Sustainable Development (Johannesburg, South Africa), The 3rd United Nations Least Developed Countries Conference (Brussels, Belgium) Moderated an AIDS panel during the Congressional Black Caucus at the invitation of Congresswoman Barbara Lee.

Mpule Kwelagobe was honored with the Jonathan Mann Health Human Rights Award by the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care (IAPAC). In 2003, she was selected as a Global Leader for Tomorrow (GLT) by the World Economic Forum joining nearly 500 individuals from business, politics, public interest groups, the media, and the arts and the sciences, including Bill Gates, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Michael Dell and Bono, who have been selected since the programme’s inception in 1993. In 2006, she was again selected by the World Economic Forum as a Young Global Leader (YGL). Mpule holds a degree in political science (international political economy) from Columbia University in the City of New York. Today as an Ethnoscientist, Mpule heads the
MPULE Institute for Endogenous Developmenta New York City-based policy advocacy think tank that engages in research on traditional knowledge systems (TKS) and how they inform endogenous development, green growth and gender equality and women’s empowerment (GEWE) in Africa. In 2012 the MPULE Institute launched “In Women’s Hands: Empowering the Next Generation of African Female Leaders” campaign to advance gender equality in agricultural and rural development in Africa.

IRENE SAEZ
Miss Universe 1981 from Venezuela

Venezuelan politician and model

Irene Saez got the Miss Universe 1981 crown at the age of 19 representing Venezuela. She won the 2nd MU crown for Venezuela in New York City. After her reign, she studied political science at the Cental University of Venezuela and became the mayor of Chacao Municipality in the early 1990s. She ranked 83rd of the 100 most powerful women in the world by The Times of London in 1995. In 1997, Miss Universe Organization gave her the Distinguished Achievement Award at the Miss Universe pageant. She ran for presidency in Venezuela in 1998 but failed to win. Soon after the presidential election, Saez was elected Governor of the state of Nueva Esparta where she won overwhelmingly with more than 70% of votes. She served as governor of the state until 2000. In October 2002 went to work for the Colonial Bank in Florida as Director of Public Relations.

WENDY FITZWILLIAMS
Miss Universe 1998 from Trinidad & Tobago
Goodwill Ambassador

Wendy Fitzwilliams is the third of African heritage to win the title. During her reign, she was honored by the United Nations and bestowed the title of UNAIDS and UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador for her work in HIV/AIDS education and awareness. Her dedication to the HIV/AIDS cause also led her to find The Hibiscus Foundation (THF) in Trinidad & Tobago in 1998. After her reign, she recorded a jazz demo and continued her education. In 2000, she was admitted into the bar. Wendy has also acted as a judge and host for many regional and international pageants. She was the Vice President of Investment Promotion at the Evolving TecKnologies and Enterprise Development Company Limited (E TecK), a state-owned company in Trinidad and Tobago. She is also attached to the Trinidad Guardian’s Guardian in Education: Making a Difference project, a series of motivational school tours aiming to promote the development of the country’s diversity. Her dedication to hard work is not just limited to her career, and over the years she has lent herself greatly to her passion for human and social development by championing various charitable causes both big and small. A highlight of her social work came when she became appointed the Red Cross Ambassador of Youth for the Caribbean. This is the first time the Red Cross has appointed anyone to this high honorary office. In this capacity she has been afforded the opportunity to address the World’s Youth globally, most recently as the keynote speaker of the Summit of The Americas V in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
