Miss Universe Canada 2013 Title Went Out Of Hand
Just a day after she was declared and crowned Miss Universe Canada 2013, Denise Garrido, 26 from Bradford, Ontario was stripped of her title after a tabulation error admitted by the Miss Universe Canada, and deeply apologized to all that are concerned especially to Denise through their website post after the unfortunate incident. The title was then given to the 1st Runner-Up, Riza Santos of Calgary, Alberta. In their official web post, Miss Universe Canada says, “We, Miss Universe Canada, made a mistake, a human mistake, one we did not ask for. After 24 hours of being crowned Miss Universe Canada, Denise Garrido was told the crown belonged to another, Riza Santos. Our first concern was for both Riza and Denise; we wanted to be sure they were okay.”
“The Miss Universe Canada pageant is not a place for perfectionism; it is a place of genuine character and beauty. Miss Universe Canada is deeply sincere in making sure this does not happen again; however, we have to admire what has shone through these young women”, they added.
“As we were sitting down, just the tone of the voice, I felt there was some sadness behind the tone. My heart sank, I thought, ‘Uh-oh,'” Garrido says.
It was when the director of Miss Universe Canada told her what had actually transpired before they announced the winners, where she (Garrido) actually placed fourth.
“I was still on this adrenaline rush and completely exhausted. I was still sleep-deprived. So I didn’t know if this was actually real,” she says. “I was like, ‘No, there is no way.’ At the same time, I thought, ‘How am I going to face everyone at home, all the congratulations?’ I was feeling embarrassed and shocked and I was in disbelief.”
Meanwhile, pageant veteran Riza Santos who represented Canada in Miss Earth 2006 and Miss World 2011 initially felt disappointed after being announced as first runner-up. She was in Las Vegas when informed of the mistake. “I’m not really sure how I feel about,” she says. “I’m not disappointed about it. I did miss the victory party. At the same time, people who were really close to me – they were the ones who reached out to me afterwards. I do appreciate that a great deal. I actually am content with everything that happens. My heart goes out to Denise.”
